Eager to try somewhere new, we ventured to Brandon’s of Canonmills for a lovely Sunday Brunch before heading off to work. It’s fantastic location means it’s once again, the type of place we have driven past countless times and have been meaning to try for a v long time– and we’re so glad we did!
We loved everything about this place- from the vinyls playing in the background, to the quirky mix of old and new- think chipboard notice boards/vintage school chairs, with gorgeous pendant lights and that ceiling…
Thankfully, the food was nothing like those school dinners I remember, even if the chairs took me straight back to the classroom!
We did the usual and each ordered a cappuccino and a fresh orange juice. We’ve surmised it’s the perfect wake-me-up combo, especially on a Sunday morning. The coffee, supplied by Williams & Johnson was top notch.
His: Full Bhoona Big Breakfast
Puddledub streaky bacon, pork & apple sausages, baked beans,
portobello mushroom, potato scone, black pudding, hash brown, & eggs how you like them, poached.
As the most expensive item on the Brunch menu, and with promise of being ‘full’ and ‘big’, this dish definitely lived up to our expectations. Every single thing was cooked to perfection. The bacon was just the right amount of smoky and streaky, the poached eggs had lovely oozy yolks and I don’t know what the deal was with the potato scones but they were addictive.
Hers: Salt Beef Hash
Salt beef cooked with potatoes, shallots and seasoning. Topped with a poached egg & sriracha.
Back to the school dinners theme here. I was intrigued by this as it seemed slightly reminiscent of corned beef hash, or ‘Stovies’, a recurring item on the canteen menu. That being said, I can’t recommend this enough. The salt beef was succulent and couldn’t be further from what I remember corned beef hash tasting like. Throw in the perfectly poached egg and dash of sriracha and it was a breakfast made in heaven!
We Shared: Buttermilk Pancakes
Oak smoked streaky bacon
or roasted banana & blueberries
and maple syrup
In hindsight we probably shouldn’t of ordered these as well, but once again our eyes were bigger than our stomachs! Nevertheless I’m glad we got to try them, they were absolutely lovely. We did feel the syrup was in modest supply so ordered some more on the side.
Overall we love love loved our visit to Brandon’s. Penny was well received and catered for with water bowl. The staff were so attentive and made an effort to chat with us which is always nice. We can’t wait to return.
