New in Leith: The Greenhouse

The Space

Last month saw the opening of The Greenhouse on Constitution Street, Leith, from the same creators of The Black Fox. The unit was once home to The Constitution Bar, a somewhat popular sports bar– but you never would’ve guessed it at first look. The space has been transformed into a light and airy restaurant/bar filled with greenery and cherry blossom, with some stunning industrial features which contrast nicely.

The Menu

As my Mum was through in Edinburgh for the day and has recently stopped eating meat, we decided to give this place a go. I had had a wee peruse of their menus online and we’d both been drawn to the extensive offerings for both vegans, vegetarians and meat eaters.

As you can see, the menu’s full of a wide selection of brunch/lunch options, as well as more filling burgers and salads, not to mention the tacos which all sounded delicious.

We Ate

I went for the ‘Big Trouble in Little China’ Burger, with breaded chicken breast, topped with crispy onions and hoi sin sauce. I was curious about the hoi sin sauce and chicken combo, as I’ve only tried it with duck before– but it actually worked so well. The burger was accompanied by herb salt fries, pink coleslaw, side salad and a focaccia bun that held everything together much better than a brioche bun and tasted insanely good.

My Mum went for the Jackfruit Special (V, DF, GF) with BBQ sauce, served in 2 tacos on soft corn tortillas with salsa and guacamole. Like many vegetarians, she became fed up of quorn very quickly in her new diet and so was dying to try the much-talked about ‘Jackfruit’, which even I have to admit tasted deceivingly like pulled pork.

We Drank

We both stuck to water during our meal and afterwards ordered a rose chai latte and Aperol spritz to finish the meal nicely. Of course, we also brought along Penny, who was warmly welcomed and also enjoyed a water bowl.

Overall, I have to say I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the Jackfruit Tacos and can’t wait to go back and try some of the other vegetarian options! The service was absolutely lovely and we felt really well looked after.

Welcome to The Shore guys, we’re glad you’re here!
