Brunch @ Candy Bar

The last time I went to Candy Bar was after a morning of lectures in my third year of uni, hello stress eating (we’ve all been there!). Their recent refurb has completely transformed the space into such a light, airy and green space you almost forget you’re actually in a basement!

Long, long gone is the dark venue that still smelled of drinks spilt the night before and the ever popular ‘Food for a Fiver’. It is now the kind of place you could spend hours during the day on a Saturday and not even notice. The food is still on the affordable side for George Street, but I can honestly say the food is so much better and I really don’t mind paying a few extra quid for such quality.

Starters

Rather than going strictly ‘His & Hers’ we decided to order a few different side orders/bites to share and a main course each, so we could try as much of the new menu as possible. We went for Mac & Cheese fritters (below), Chilli Fries & Crispy Battered Onion Rings (above). The fried Ravioli ‘Nachos’ were completely irresistible as well, so we went for the Haggis, Neeps & Tatties and Four Cheese flavours.

Mains

We were both feeling rather full after the first course so opted for the lighter options on the Menu…

Hers: Pastrami & Pickle ‘Delwich’ with Russian Dressing & Parmesan Fries

As a recent convert to pickles, I had to try this sandwich that was filled with them. They went really nicely with the pastrami (duh) and the Russian dressing. This was just the perfect amount of food for me and a nice change from a burger or pizza (which also sounded amazing!).

His: Candy House Salad with Chargrilled Chicken

As with all the other salads on the menu, protein is customisable and with 6 to choose from, there is something for everyone. After a rather heavy first course this was really light and refreshing and the perfect dish for a hot summers day.

 Dessert

For dessert, we ordered the Smores Crispy Waffle Pancakes with Marshmallows, Honey and Milk Chocolate. We also had an old-fashioned Banana Split with Salted Caramel that was not only delicious but a massive 90s throwback, we loved it.

The Verdict

Food – 10/10
Atmosphere – 9/10
Service – 10/10
Value – 10/10

Ambience – light and airy surrounds with lots of foliage and greenery, with a slightly industrial feel at the same time. We loved the open feel of the place and the outside seating both on George Street and in the courtyard would be a lovely place to pass the time.
